We bring together Italy’s two most beautiful lakes on this wonderful Christmas holiday, to create a spectacular Italian experience. We stay at breath-taking Lake Maggiore, Italy’s second largest lake which is Mediterranean in climate and has a backdrop of the Alps in the distance and we also visit Lake Como. In the north Lake Maggiore crosses the Swiss border into the canton of Ticino. Ferries and steamers criss-cross the lake from one delightful harbour to the next, passing picturesque lakeside villages with their bustling promenades. Some also sail into Switzerland on the northern shores of the lake. There are Christmas markets to visit, shops and boutiques to browse around and pavement cafes to relax in as you watch the world go by.

This is a wonderful festive holiday which combines truly stunning scenery and the old-world charm of Italy’s most beautiful lake which, over the years, has welcomed royalty, prime ministers and authors including Queen Victoria, Winston Churchill and Ernest Hemingway.

Lake Maggiore has a mild, Mediterranean climate year round and the region enjoys 280 days of sunshine a year. On this festive holiday you’ll enjoy stunning scenery as we visit the crystal clear lakes of Lake Maggiore and Lake Como. As there is no summer heat haze, the sky is often remarkably clear. If you're lucky you'll be able to enjoy a brilliant blue sky, dazzling snow-capped mountains and a rich blue lake.

Excursions & Itinerary

Day 1: 23 December - Fly to Italy

Fly from your local airport to Italy. On arrival at Milan Airport you will be met and transferred to our hotel in Stresa, where we stay for five nights. Five breakfasts and five dinners are included in the hotel.

Day 2 : Christmas Eve - Pallanza & The Borromean Islands

This morning after a leisurely breakfast we sail by private launch to Pallanza. This elegant town looks out over Lake Maggiore from its lakeside location on the Borromean Gulf. Dating back to Roman times, today Pallanza is a renowned tourist resort. The historic centre is crisscrossed by ancient streets and squares lined with fine, substantial period buildings with ornamental doorways and porticos. Pallanza’s lakefront is one of the finest on Lake Maggiore; enjoy a walk along its promenade with the lake and the Borromean Islands on one side and colourful facades, porticos, terraces and cafés on the other. After our visit here we re-join our boat and sail across the bay to Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen's Island) which is a bustling fishing community, with a picturesque jumble of cottages which occupies almost the entire small island. There is a good choice of restaurants on the island and there will be ample time here for you to have refreshments or lunch. We then sail to Isola Bella (Beautiful Island). Today it is hard to believe it was once a rocky island, home to a small community of fishermen. In 1630 Carlo III Borromeo took the first steps to changing the island. He hired an architect to design a castle-type building where the palace currently stands at the highest point of the island. Carlo also decided to name the island after his wife, Isabella D’Adda, and it became known as Isola Isabella (later to be shortened to Isola Bella). Although the palace and the gardens are closed you can stroll around the small village admiring the splendid panoramas and browsing the shops open during the Christmas period. At the end of our day on the lake we sail back to Stresa.

Day 3: Christmas Day

Happy Christmas! Enjoy a leisurely morning opening your presents. This afternoon you could make your way to the lakeside promenade which is a favourite 'passegiatta' for the locals out for a Christmas Day stroll. This evening our tour manager and the hotelier will invite you to join them for an aperitif before our 4 course Christmas Dinner of roast turkey.

Day 4: Boxing Day

Today is at leisure in Stresa. Some people will choose to enjoy the comfortable surroundings of the hotel or stroll into Stresa. If you want to see even more of Italy, you can take a train from Stresa into the centre of Milan in just under an hour. Or you could sail northwards on the lake to Locarno in Switzerland. This evening we have our farewell dinner.

Day 5: 27th December - Lake Como

From Roman Emperors to today’s Hollywood film stars, Lake Como has always been one of Italy’s popular destinations. Lying between the Alps and Lombardy, Lake Como’s scenery is magnificent and full of contrasts. We drive along the spectacular shoreline of the lake to Tremezzo, from where we have included a boat trip across the lake to Bellagio - said to be the prettiest village in the whole of Italy. The village is a jumble of cobbled lanes and streets lined with stylish boutiques, wine bars and craft shops selling locally produced handicrafts. After our visit we sail along the lake to Como city where every year, from mid-November until 6th of January, Como is transformed, becoming a magical place with the Christmas atmosphere of the event “City of Toys”. The artistic and animated projections colour the buildings in the historic centre of the city, whilst the Christmas Market has typical produce of the area and original ideas for gifts. We return to Stresa following our visit here.

Day6: 28th December - Homeward Bound

It’s ’Arriverderci Italia’ today when we return to the airport for our flight back to the UK. If your flight is in the morning or over the lunchtime period, we will take you to the airport after breakfast. If your flight is in the late afternoon or evening, there will be time at leisure before leaving for the airport.
